Chapter 38 Welcome to Knockturn Alley (reward for the reward.

Ten minutes later, Xing Ze changed into a set of clothes from the shop owner's youngest son.

"That makes him look like a fool from the east."

"That's wrong, um - it's very weird." John looked around, then grabbed a handful of mud from the ground and smeared it on Xing Ze's pants and shirt, "It looks much better now."

John patted his leg and said: "Let's go now, boy, remember what he just said..."

"Don't stare at people, and don't talk to strangers. Beware of children, for they steal, and old men, for they steal, too. John, he is no longer a child."

John shrugged and said, "Hell, stop calling him John, that's a fucking horrible name. Call him J, or Big Dog."

Although Knockturn Alley is right next to Wrong Corner Alley, the two are completely different. If not a metaphor, they are like two strangers.

Maybe Corner Lane punched his brother when he was still in his mother's womb, causing the two to part ways, who knows? It is rare in the world for two streets next to each other to present completely different social forms.

Damp, dark and dilapidated, that place reminded Xing Ze of many past events. He smelled the mixed stench of alcohol, inferior perfume and unknown potions permeating the air.

Local residents gathered together in twos and threes. They lowered their heads, whispered, and looked at me secretly when I wasn't paying attention.

Children run by on the street from time to time, but they are not playing, but testing whether they can put their legs in my pocket. The old people were more direct. They would approach me with unsteady steps and then fall on me.

Most outsiders wear black hooded robes, move furtively, and look in a hurry. Unless they are asking to buy something, they rarely stay in one place for too long.

Along the way, Xing Ze drove away two beggars, three children, and a peddler selling magic medicine. He claimed that his medicine powder was ground from the horns of horned camel beasts and could aphrodisiac.

He was quickly chased away by John, "Damn the liar." John spat at the hawker's back, "He tried the powder, which tasted like smelly socks and had no effect at all."

Xing Ze looked at J, as if he were seeing a fish returning to the sea. Whether it was the smell of his presence or his bad and neurotic character, they were exactly the same as Knockturn Alley.

"Where are they going?"

"Have a drink." John pointed in a direction, "It's right in front."

"I have some misunderstanding, J. He doesn't have much time."

John made a face, "He knows he knows, continue to tell him about those two Aurors, what are they called, David and Danny?"

"Alvin and Sage."

"That's right, he remembered it. I think, talk to him more, and then give him a glass of wine to sober up. Maybe he can remember more things."

They walked into a pub without a sign. John asked the bartender for a glass of bourbon and pointed out to Xing Ze to pay.

"What about me, stranger? What do you want?" The bartender asked Xing Ze. He was not tall but very strong, and his exposed legs and arms were covered with thick hair.

"A glass of soda water." Xing Ze said.

The bartender chuckled a few times, turned to John and asked, "Who is that silly boy?"

"Uh-" John looked at Xing Ze and thought for a moment, "His nephew."

"Fuck you, big dog." The bartender took out a glass and pointed at the whiskey. "People like me are very related? Are they not foreigners?"

"Don't pay attention to him, Donnie." John drank the wine in one gulp and stretched his legs to knock on the bar. "His brother wants him to experience life with him."

Donnie poured another finger of whiskey, "Stop fucking nonsense, J. I told him that he went to a brothel with me to experience life. He didn't believe it."

Xing Ze didn't pay attention to the conversation between the bartender and John. He turned around and leaned against the bar counter to observe the entire bar. He saw a child selling candy.

The child was also looking at him, and the two looked at each other for a while, and then the child ran out of the back door. He had to turn his attention back to John and the bartender.

He saw John take out a Galleons from his pocket and put it on the table. Before entering the bar, the Galleons belonged to him, and he was sure that two fingers of whiskey would not cost that much.

"Tell him, Donnie, what interesting things have happened recently." John pushed the galleons towards the bartender, "Or some interesting people have come."

"I know, J," the bar expertly slid the gold coin into the center of his leg, "that rotten place is hopeless."

John's expression changed, but he soon returned to his original appearance, "Has the price increased, Donnie?"

"No, I made a big fuss in his brother's bar last night. Do I remember it very well?"

John glanced at Xing Ze guiltily and begged the bartender with an innocent face: "Donnie, hey, man, do you have to choose that time?"

"I know the rules, J. If you break something, ask for compensation."

"How much?"

"What did I say?" Donnie turned to look at Xing Ze.

Xing Ze turned around and faced Donnie, "He broke the things, plus information consulting fees."

Donnie hesitated and glanced at John, who smiled playfully.

"Li Yi..."

"Hey." Xing Ze interrupted the bartender, who narrowed his eyes and stared at him, "Don't play tricks on him, his uncle knows the price."

Donny shuddered for some reason, took a deep breath, and reported the number.

Xing Ze gave him a few Galleons and two more Cokes, "His soda, it's very good."

...

They couldn't get anything out of Donnie. He talked about a lot of recent events, most of which were trivial matters, but there were also some noteworthy things, such as the Boiling Oil Gang hacking several people to death in the street, and a prostitute was found dead not far from the Avery old house...

Of course, every bartender would hide some explosive news. Donnie said that in the past six months, more people have disappeared in Knockturn Alley, first the homeless and the elderly, then children and outsiders.

"Damn, they spent a lot of money in vain." After walking out of the bar, John began to complain, "There are more missing people, damn it, why didn't that bitch say that the death toll has increased. Every day, there will be fewer people in that shitty place, but there will be a steady stream of people pouring in. The squibs abandoned by the big families, illegitimate children, criminals, fuck..." After discovering that Xing Ze was not listening to him and was scribbling in his notebook, John laughed disdainfully and said, "I'm wasting my time, stranger, there are not many people who disappeared in Knockturn Alley to be found. If I'm lucky, I will find them in the Thames." "Then I'm investigating the case, not catching rabbits." Xing Ze put away his notebook, "Please be patient, uncle."
