I Was a Swordsman in Ancient Japan

(Free) [Military System in the Edo Period] (1)

Ogata and the shogunate army broke out in a full-scale conflict, for the convenience of everyone to substitute into the plot of this book. The author Jun specially opened up this chapter of science popularization that does not charge money, and here is a brief talk about the military system in the Edo period.

First of all, the author would like to say something to everyone:

[All the information in this chapter was found by the author by browsing the Internet and books. There may be some errors. After all, the author is not a professional scholar, and the information found is also varied (leopard head crying.jpg).

If there is any mistake, everyone can mention it, but don't say anything ugly, everyone get along with each other~]

Kaizong Mingyi-Don't overestimate the combat power of the shogunate army that is only 70 years away from the end of the Edo shogunate (destroyed in 1868 AD) in the third year of Kanzheng (AD 1791).

After you listen to the author's introduction to the military system in the Edo period, you will feel that it is not an exaggeration for Ogata to open Wushuang alone in the camp of the First Army.

First of all-the shogunate in the Edo period was basically [there is no standing army that does nothing except military training in everyone's impression].

In the Edo period, what could barely be considered a standing army was an organization called the "Sanban Group". Although it can barely be regarded as a standing army, its number is extremely small.

I will tell you more about the "Third Fan Group" later.

If there is a war, like in this book, the shogunate intends to mobilize troops against the Red Moon Fortress, the shogunate will mobilize the Banner Samurai and Royal Family Samurai directly under the general.

The author only found information about the Kanei period (1624-1643).

According to the military service regulations of the shogunate, during the Kanyong period, for every samurai of the banner who earned 500 shi, 13 people would serve in the military. That is to say, during the Kanyong period, the Banner Samurai with an annual salary of 5,000 shi had the obligation to mobilize 130 soldiers to participate in the battle.

The author did not find out how much military service the imperial family samurai was responsible for.

This is the origin of the saying "Qi Ben 80,000 riders".

It does not mean that there are 80,000 Banner Samurai, but theoretically speaking—all the Banner Samurai and Royal Family Samurai can mobilize more than 80,000 troops.

The soldiers mobilized by these Banner Warriors and Imperial Family Warriors,

It is the main component of a shogunate army.

And these temporarily mobilized soldiers may still be doing various tasks such as bookkeeping and planning the day before they went to the barracks to report.

That is to say——in this book, the 5,000 shogunate army, which accounts for half of the 10,000 army, most of them are [this kind of soldiers temporarily mobilized by the banner warriors and royal family warriors].

In terms of pulling hips, the vassal army of each vassal is more than the shogunate army.

Almost all the feudal states have no standing army at all. When a war occurs, the warriors in the feudal state are called up and start fighting directly.

for example:

If Ogata is still working as a treasury officer in the Hirose clan and planning plans, and a war suddenly breaks out in the Hirose clan, such as a peasant uprising or something, the lord of the clan will issue a convening order. Then Ogata is obliged to immediately put aside the abacus in his hand, put on his own knife, and rush to the designated place to report to participate in the war-even though Ogata has never had any military training at all before.

So to call the 10,000 generals who are now working on the Red Moon Fortress "professional soldiers" is really flattering them... Most of them usually don't have any military training at all.

The samurai under the Kansei era have become decadent and degenerate, and samurai who can devote themselves to learning and studying martial arts are rare.

The warriors at the bottom exhausted most of their minds and energy just to solve the problem of eating.

After that, I will slowly explain to you the vassal armies of each vassal and what the "Sanfan Group" is all about.

After listening to my explanation, do you feel that it is no longer an exaggeration for Ogata to open Wushuang in the barracks of the First Army?

Most of the people in the First Army are not soldiers at all! Many people may be accountants, warehouse keepers, bridge keepers in the skin of warriors who have never even waved a knife...
